DJ Wood

DJ Wood

Place of birth/ Scotland Age 28 years old I was placed into care from an early age and have encountered various problems in relation to my mental health. I found myself homeless, and at 21 was sleeping rough in Manchester and continually in and out of hospital. By 2005, I was desperate to kick start my life and break the cycle of frustration and depression I found myself in. I decided to attend the Booth Centre in 2005 and started to regularly attend various activities. The activities were of great benefit to me and I realised I have the ability to see things through to the end and in deed I have various talents in different things. I have always had very keen interest in music and have dreamt of becoming a DJ and working on a radio station.

The Booth centre contacted ALL FM 96.6, and enrolled me onto their community radio training course. Initially I was nervous and apprehensive but with support from the Booth Centre staff and my dedication and ambition, I agreed to attend the training course. At first I doubted myself and my ability but with great support from the Booth Centre I quickly adapted to radio producing and to team work. I learnt all aspects of radio producing, from desk driving to writing a running order and actually scripting and making my own live show. People continually doubted my ability to pull off a live radio show and some even doubted I was at a radio station at all but after my live show people apologised for doubting me and everyone was very pleased.

ALL FM have now taken me on as a volunteer and I am currently on a GCSE course for radio producing. I can’t thank the Booth Centre enough for helping me get back on my feet. They have helped me get out and about which prevents me thinking about my mental health problems and it enables me to get on with life. I do require the right medication, but mixed with the Booth Centre activities, this acts as therapy and It helps me not to get stressed as this causes me to get ill.

I now have high hopes for the future and I am in the process of arranging to work with Children In Need, to share my skills and knowledge and hopefully raise funds for the charity which I hold close to my heart.
